Your right you will loose travel if its not done correctly. I bought some Bilstein Motorsport strut inserts that are real short but they are $ 250 each then the casings have to be made.
I will post how they turn out.

i also have a set off my 1979 1200, i cut the tops off and took apart the guts and drained the oil. what can i do with these?
my original plan was to find some inserts that would fit inside the hollowed out strut bodies, but they look to be very narrow in diameter, and not worth the trouble of hunting down inserts for them.
my second plan was to weld openable front VW strut casings ontop of the 79 strut casing after i have cut off everything but the bottem part that has the mounting hardware. and put some koni yellow VW struts inside them. my only concern is that i think i will loose suspension travel if i'm going with this plan.
right now i am looking for a full replacement strut (not casing+insert) that will fit into the hub hole (42.86mm or 1 and 11/16 inches) and shorter than ~343mm (or 13.5 inches) in length. hopefuly with the help of some people i can find an off the shelf koni yellow sturt that will fit these dimensions.
if this plan fails, i would like to know some alternative things i can do with these front 79 strut casings i have now. and if my current plan works, i'll share the info to all you guys and will give the strut casings to who ever wants them if they pay for shipping.

Don,
I have a pair of front strut casings for you. Cut at the top and drained of nasty oil and guts. I know you needed only the bottom 3" but I'm sure you can cut them to length. Still need them?
