Do those centers fit the 2nd gens as well?
By Adrian (Evocivic) (203.42.97.141) on Saturday, January 08, 2005 - 01:41 am: |
Not the whole gearbox, just the diff center.

Whoa, which gearboxes bolt on to 1200 civic?
By Don (63.135.203.197) on Friday, January 07, 2005 - 06:12 am: |
I dont know but opm has good reviews from people unlike the phantomslip. They do it to the 84-87 diff all the time and its a bolt in to the 1200 box if the 1200 diff wont go.

I just don't see how there would be enough meat in the stock case to modify into a LSD. It seems it would require machine work to get the clutches in there, and it is very thin on the outside of the side gears.

For a factory LSD you would have to look D-series honda or newer. Unless Mugen made an LSD for the racing City Turbos, but finding one of those is even less likely than... i dunno, something very unlikely.

not sure of the name of the place but a guy at my work recently got a LDS made for his 91 chevy caviler (sp?) it was down in the states somewhere and they used a core diff from his tranny.
By Don (199.2.139.227) on Wednesday, January 05, 2005 - 05:05 pm: |
The gear ratio spacing on the City are the same as the 80 Civic 1300 so thats not worth importing.
I have to find the web address again but there a place that will convert your diff to an lsd for about 700 they work well to according to people who have them the place is named OPM I think. Maybe not quite as good as a Mugen but allot better than the phantom slip.

It's a long shot but, does the City Turbo tranny have LSD? If so, any idea what type?

hey the turbo gearbox fits in perfect i just used the civic clutch and flywheel-the 4spd boxes would prob be better for racing as the 5th is really long and only really seems good for motorway cruising, well thats my 2c-if your interested in getting a turbo2 box there is a honda wrecker here in nz that does them fairly cheap but not sure if they would ship? i can ask?

Another gearbox maker in Canada is Jamie Houseman at racegearbox.com. He is preparing a racing gearbox for me right now for SCCA GTL based on the '80 - '82 Civic 5 speed.

Thanks Adrian and Hugh
Yes for national level competition people go crazy with money, but sorry to say if I was going to do that it would not be in my Honda 1200
Mazda and Nissan have so many old factory comp parts floating around the USA is relatively easy and cheap to snag factory race parts like gear boxes etc. My Honda is just a toy and I like collecting good parts when I can find them reasonable. I'm chasing down a few leads on boxes but nothing has paned out so far. I may have to make one up new if none pan out, but I probably would try and get a few more people together and have someone do about three or more sets at a time I think this would drive the cost down per box considerably. One good thing with limited prep production racing in the scca is you get a weight break for running the stock gear box, but a custom one is still faster. I should find out in the next few months if they approved my request or if its altered to the point that its best to go race somewere else.

Yeah well thanks for that adrian, yup it is expensive, but so is anything else thats at the top of its class, you only ever have to buy holinger once as his work is bulletproof. I mean we are talking competition vehicles here aren't we? where tenths count? and hundredths costs thousands?

I remember he also did a direct top 5 speed with evenly spaced 4th and 3rd gears in an accord tranny with the accord diff but a civic bellhousing for a cable clutch. I never drove it but it was apparently a real hoot with a hot el motor in a civic rallycar.

Don,
I had a 1st gen 4 speed with direct drive top and 0.75 third. It was in my rally car in the early eighties and it went like s h 1 t off a shiney shovel. These gears were straight cut (noisy as hell) here in australia by Peter Hollinger, who's still in buisness and who's details I am trying to find for you. he now makes all sorts of bulletproof high end racing trannys and gear sets.

H production (limited prep) if Scca ever gets a ruling on my request

Don,
What class of racing are you considering? Or is the trans separate from racing? Just curious.

I was remembering someone said that the Turbo Cities had a slightly closer ratio transmission. Anyone know the ratios off hand. Just trying to see if its worth importing or if the ratios are similar to what we have here in the USA. Also just on chance if anyone has a close ratio (non - oem) gear set reasonable, let me know.
