Sounds good, I may just do both ideas, I'm a little over cautious that way =)

Kyle, to add to Andrew's advice, once the valve cover comes off, you remove the drive gear cover and pull out the drive shaft and gear. The gear then slides off the bottom of the shaft. My drill chuck was too big, so I had to make an adapter to spin the shaft. I took a nutdriver hex bit and filed a slot into it so it would fit over the end of the shaft and hook the pin.
If you don't want to do all of that, there's an easier way that's almost as good. Half fill the oil filter prior to install, squirt a little WD-40 in each of the cylinder bores, remove the valve cover and fill the cam valley with oil from end to end, disconnect the primary coil wire, then crank the engine until you build pressure and see oil squirting from the top end. yeah, the gear just slides off and there is a pin that goes through the shaft that aligns it in the gear. you have to pull the pin out to put a drill on the shaft.

Your talking about taking the gear off the top of the shaft right? the manual doesn't have the greatest pics so I wasn't sure if it came off or not. I'm not quite at that stage so I didn't want to take the cover off, I was just curious, thanks

i knocked the pin out of the end of the oil pump drive shaft and put it in a cordless drill and ran it till oil came out of the passages. i also poured my last liter of oil over the entire valve assembly with the valve cover off. the important part there is to fill the area under the cam as it’s the only lubrication the lobes receive. that trough also feeds oil to the distributor gear via a small hole on the back side of the motor (no. 4 side)

Whats the proper way to lubricate an EL motor thats been sitting for a while without oil in it? I took the motor out of my car about 2 mounths ago to swap the tranny/paint the engine bay/do some things over again that I wasn't happy with. I had the oil pan off to paint it and now I'm a little concerned about just pouring oil in and firing it up. I don't want to run the risk of ruining anything, but I don't know how I would go about pumping oil through it because of the whole cam driven gear problem
Any suggestions?
