You are right it is a lot of work to install the diff correctly. You could try it and might have some success with it.
Adrian tried to get a run of quaiff type diffs going about 2 years ago. If I remember correctly, back then it was about $1000 us. I know Don, myself, and maybe one other person that was a deffinate. It sure would be nice to get them made.

I think it would take solid commitment from maybe ten or twelve buyers to get one of these builders to do a limited run of Quaife style(torsen) LSD units to fit our cars. But an order of that number might drop the price to somewhere close to reality. Personally I don't see the Phantom Grip as workable on anything but a strictly race only(that is to say low miles per season) car. Common sense tells you that they way in which they do what they do is going to add stresses and increased wear on an already weak carrier.
The stock part not being so weak when only dealing with stock HP, but with the uses we tend to expose them to, well...
Torsens are nigh on bulletproof and can easily last the life of a car.

I say use it and see how it goes. Definately keep looking for another one though. There's gotta be something out there out of some older cars. Would be nice if some like OBX who already copied Quaife lsd made a run of 1200's.
yep

Okay, so I feel pretty dumb right now calling this Phantom Grip peice a clutch-style LSD. Funny how much you can learn in 24 hours. Putting this in my car is going to take a great deal of work, so at this point I'm undecided about it.

Frito, I did see your pics of the destroyed differential (tooth ground up)from you other civic. Ouch. Did you notice if the Phantom Grip did anything positive to control traction prior to it destroying your B18 tranny?

Thanks for that link Phil. I just read it all, and while many did not like the PG, some did like it and have won races using it. Interesting, many that did not like it drove rear drive cars, while those that did drove front drive cars.

Ted,
On the improvedtouring.com forum section, they currently have many posts about the phantom grip limited slip. I would give you the link to the posts but I cannot access a sports related website here at work. In a nutshell, it's a piece of junk. I currently don't know who makes a limited slip to fit the 1G civic tranny. If you can find a Mugen, buy it quickly! I wish I could be of more help. Also, on the redpepperracing.com 1G CRX forum, a guy (Doodson) is trying to get a group buy started on a limited slip that looks similar to the phantom grip but "supposed" to be better. If the guy gets 8 buyers, the cost is $200 plus shipping. However, I do not believe that particular limited slip would fit the 1G Civic, I don't really know. Here is the link to that post:

phantom grip blew up my differential in a B18C transmission. thing went cockeyed and ate gear/teeth.

Thanks Bryan. Grassroots Motorsports magazine did a comparison of LSD for front drive cars, and I thought it listed this type as clutch-style.
Do you know how effective the phantom grip is on controling slip?

Ted, it looks like a phantom grip to me. The clutches would be on the out side of the side gears, and I see none. That appears to be a stock diff. with the preload blocks installed.

Anybody identify this part? It's a clutch-style LSD for the first gen tranny.
