realised i had a city turbo 2 gearbox lying around
put the clutch and pressure plate from that box on, and hopefully it all bots up nice and easy
i think it has really low ratio's as well which should be good for fuel ecconomy

Or drop a manual box in ... not exactly a difficult operation.

Chances are that the previous owner used it as an auto and always started in second, thus burning out the clutches. Also the wrong auto tranny fluid can destroy these boxes.
Just like any other gearbox they can be rebuilt but I believe the clutch packs are very expensive and hard to come by. As Andrew said, just find a second hand one somewhere. You'll probably have to buy a whole car for a couple of hundred $ to get the box ...

What's the point? It would cost far more than a working second hand one.

is there any chance that the existing gearbox can be repaired ?

It's NOT an auto, it's a SEMI auto. You still have to shift manually. DON'T start in second, always start in first.

Yes the problem is a bad transmission ...take old one out and put a new one, preferably a stick in its place.
