Kris,There could nothing or everything wrong, jumped timing belt, spun bearing on main or rod.A engine will still run until friction takes over and that is when all the damage happen's.
All symptoms very,Just so you are aware a machine shop will be $1500-$2000 for a complete rebuild.Ther is cheaper ways engine swaps or used engines. This all takes time and Cash.If you want to see engine parts and disasembled just call and we can meet at the shop.I can show you performace parts (Carb set-ups,cams,Headers some suspension parts)and stock. Some body parts Spoilers and wings. My email address is set up on te link.Just click on (Dana and Kyran)

argg.. sorry I just relized that zc was a type of engine a guy swapped, lol

By kris (Kris) (142.173.93.238) on Friday, February 25, 2005 - 12:39 am:

oh also one more thing, I think its a zc or is it cz? because it has this hoodscoop on it and red stripe (the whole hood roof and trunk is the stripe). What is a zc?what makes it a zc?

So I looked at the car, and it looks pretty darn good. Everything is there right down to the lenses and honda logo on the tailgate. Theres no rust on the thing. By the way I forgot the camera at home, doh. The person was wrong about it having a blown head gasket, it was another honda. This car was driven to its current location in the fall. The engine and area around the engine is very clean. All the glass was good. And I was pretty stoked because next to the car I saw 4 fender flares im pretty sure are for it. The interior aint purdy, the drivers seat is pretty ripped and the others werent vary nice. So hopefully I could pull some outa the car at pick n pull. The tires are pretty good on it. There appears do be some suspension rust around the back, nothing through, you could wire brush it off and then sand paper. The gas tant looked new, I was pretty surprised. Ok, anyways, I think Im gonna go up there with my dad and friend this weekend. Im gonna take some oil/antifreeze/ brake fluid and see what works.

So I would like to discuss what could be the worst situation for the motor? (mainly components in the engine, not carb ect.)

If it was driven there then a rod couldnt be blown or the anthing horrible like that. The oil pump would have to be working.

The only things that come to mind that could be wrong with it would be low compression, something wrong with valves, head.

Anything else I should check and any info/ suggestions is appreciated.

Kris,no pressure!the 2 Honda's at pick n pull have been there for at least 5 months and I would bet that they will get crushed real soon.To find a rust free car here you are ahead of the game. Especially a 74.Kris who's your shop teacher,I might know him.Ask him if he know's Ken Stone (Keller and stone Racing)?

Good Luck Dana

Hey thanks alot Dana. You may not remember but I have already met you, I was looking for minibike parts a while back. You know my dad (Bruce) from telus.

I saw those 2 civics at pick and pull just last weekend. One still has the complete engine, its just got front impact. There were barely any parts taken of that one.

Well Ill try to post some pictures of this thing tommorow night. Thanks everyone.

Kris,If you need parts for your brakes and what ever I have 5 civic's and can help you out. There is 2 civic's at pick n pull and they both have the master brake cylinder's.Prices are good. Both car's were running last fall so the parts should be good.If you want to contact me you can call me or Kyran at 763-4376.A complete top end will run arround $125 plus the gasket kit.The gasket kit can cost you $10-$100 this is where you can save.Just so you know when a head gasket blows there is always a reason. Most common issue is Overheating.Kris I live in North Glenmore give me a call and you can see what we are doing.

Lordco is good for brakes and prices are cheap.

For wheel bearings, which must be done if you do the front rotors, go to Canadian Tire. The bearings and seals are much cheaper there than they are at Lordco.

oh for sure Vc civic, Im goin up there tommorow and Im gonna borrow a digital camera and take a picture of all the civics, that way if theres things people need i could try and get it for them and also get your guys opinion on the car I would like to buy. I talked to the guy with the civics and he's a real resonable, understands that I dont have a ton of money to blow and he said I can pull the motor out of another and basically make one car work for 300 bux...

so ya Im pretty excited about tommorow... and im glad to know theres some civic guys around where I live...

ps: Vc civic, the cars are in salmon arm (about 1 hour from kamloops) so depending where you are in vancouver it may be less than a 4 hour drive.

thanks

It's always a good idea to get the head skimmed just so you know you have a nice clean, flat surface. It's not expensive (around here getting a head or block skimmed is around $40-$60).

By kris (Kris) (207.81.244.121) on Wednesday, February 23, 2005 - 12:51 pm:

also I forgot to ask, if you replace the head gasket do you have to get the head milled down?

and also is getting the head milled down expensive? Like between 50-100 bux or is it something that would cost 300 bux to get done? (I know no one will be able to tell me exactly what it woul cost, just an estimate)

I am in the okanagan of B.C. canada more specifically kelowna. Ok thats good to know aswell about lordco. sorry, I should have specified aswell, i dont know what is wrong with it, I was just wondering were you guys get parts for things like brakes and so on. So thank you for your info, I will have to call our honda dealer and try lordco. But it seems like you guys have your finger on where some certain parts are and I am sure I will be needing your guys help with this in the future. I also found out that from my shop teacher (who turns out has owned 2 first gen civics and raced em) that compression should be about 135.

So I thank you all very much for your contributions and if anyone has any suggestions on what to check for when I go to look at this car, like typical problems/ trouble areas.

Kris,

Where are you in the lower mainland? I know that we have at least one brake master in storage also Lordco can get them in.

Well....When I bought mine the first thing that "went wrong" was the fuel pump...I was taking her first spin(from the house of previous owner) to my house and half way the fuel pump gave up on me...had to pull her home...:( and now the carb. so far..that's all for me, the rest is ok and loving her:), Oh...and Welcome to the club.

well, I looked into rebuilding my master cylinders, your best bet is to just buy a new one, a rebuild kit, if you find one is more than a new master cylinder. You will need to price new items and compare to price of rebuilding it. sometimes it is cheaper to just get a new one. most your engine parts can still be bought, along with brakes. some things are still available thru the dealer, and some things you just won't find. stuff pops up on Ebay, so keep your eyes out there, as well as here. Head should not be hard to do if your in the high school shop. you may have to take it to a machine shop and have your head milled down so it is true. Get yourself a book, they are on Ebay all the time.

Hi, Im looking at buying a 1974 civic, apparently it is rust free and the body is mint, it needs a head gasket. He only wants 300 canadian and apparently hes got 2 others so Ill look at those as well for parts possibly. But what I was wondering is where would you get a rebuild kit for the brake mastercylendar? I have phoned bow wow and other places and cant find it... Im just wondering how you guys go about getting things like that, that need to be rebuilt, as I have checked around and it no easy task. Also when I go to look at this civic what would be some trouble area's I could check? (like known problems and such)

also this is just for a highschool mechanics project of mine and I have heard aluminum head motors are fairly easy to rebuild is this true?

and what should compression be for a 1200?

thanks for helping a n00b.

kris
