ok, well I think Im gonna just gonna try to get the motor to run first off. Then maybe Ill build a good motor for it. But I appreciate all your help. I also found alot of helpful stuff by searching. I think to avoid repeat posts their should be some articles like this put in the knowledge tree so begginers like me can learn and not waste other peoples time with the same questions.

Just my 2 cents

thanks

A 74 should have an EB1 motor. EB1 and 2 heads are basically the same so putting an EB1 head on an EB2 or vice-versa will not change anything.

By kris (Kris) (207.216.228.77) on Saturday, March 05, 2005 - 01:05 am:

So what if I stuck with the EB2 block and put on a EB1 head? would this put compression up or down? Or does it even bolt on, any advantage?

thanks

Mine is a 78 daily driver. Power is a little better than the old engine (EB3). When I swapped the motor I also put in the 2nd gen 3 speed hondamatic.

Ok, thanks that helps me out alot, by the way what year is yours? and how do you find it for power? whats do you use it for mainly? (racing or dailydriver, both?)

thanks

I have an EN1 with an EB3 head in my car. The EN1 head and EB3 head are pretty much the same. The main difference being the mount for the torque rod. It works fine. And not having to modify engine mounts was a bonus.

I did some more researching and was thinking of a EN1 motor (I think they are in 80-83 civics). Would an EN1 motor bolt right up? (dont have much more tools than a ratchet set and rap/die set/ hacksaw, lol). If the EN1 head doesnt bolt up to the top motor mount, could I just put on a EB3 head? then would everything bolt right up without any fabbing?

and if so how is this head combination? im pretty sure that the EN1 head was very close to the EB3 head, but if you could confirm this or not that would be excellent aswell.

Thanks

The 74 will have an EB2.An EB3 head on an EB2 block/internals will yeild bugger all compression. The EB2 has dished pistons, the EB3 has domed. An EB2 head on an EB3 block/internals will give you high compression.

Ya ok, good idea. Also seeings as the 1974 civic im buy was parked because it over heated,And if the main bearings are good Im thinking of just pulling a head off a civic in pick n pull. Wich was the head that made the high compression? (around 10:1) I thought it was off an eb3?

thanks

You will only have to fab one mount, from the firewall to the tranny/engine.(torque rod)Other things to consider are, exhaust, fuel supply and electrical, which will have to be adapted. For the small increase in power, not worth the effort. An EN1 1335 cc from the 80-83 Civic is an easier swap and about the same power as the EM1.If this is your first engine swap keep it simple and get the EB3.Good Luck.

ok, thanks H, I talked to dana and he just told me the same thing. He also seemed to think that you could bolt it right on, but you had to take part of the subframe but that bolted off as well. But if you would be able to tell me if you have to fab/ weld mounts it would be appreciated. Also I would go with a 1751 EK1 and bold on a EL1 head, but I dont have alot of money (student) and they didnt have one in pick n pull. They also have a EB3 motor, Ill probly go with that.

Also,to answer your other question,the 1500 is a 12 valve aka CVCC.

By H (24.70.95.204) on Monday, February 28, 2005 - 04:40 pm:

The "Euro spec GLS" did not have a 1500.The "Euro spec" had the 1335 EN4 with dual carbs. In Canada it came with the 1500 EM1.Same as the states minus the the extra pollution control crap. The 1500 will bolt in to the 1st gen with a few basic mods. But if your gonna go through all that work, might aswell just get a 1751 EK1,bolt on a EL1 head and go!

Im in canada, im pretty sure the motor mounts are the same as the u.s. though. heres some info I found off the sight.

" Canadian spec 83 S models (called the 1500GLS) differed slightly from the US models, our had the EM1 CVCC 1500, but minus the electic choke and had none of the smog reducing components, not even a catalytic converter. Also we did not get the rear stabilizer bar, vented front rotors (standard issue solids) digital clock(option), right door mirror(option) or halogen headlights from the factory. However, ours did come from the factory with the manual tilt glass sunroof, and the honeycomb style grille with a red stripe around the perimeter and S badge. Ours also came in 2 colours, black pearl and silver."

USA spec "S" models had the same motor as the other '83 Civics. They used the gear ratios of the Wagon, had factory gas struts...only slightly stiffer then stock, and an additional rear anti-swaybar...pencil thin. You wouldn't think by looking at the specs these changes would make much difference, but it is noticeable. They also had the Black on Red interior, and a few other bells and whistles that were optional on the other models which came standard on the "S". Also the car only came in two colors, Red and a Black"Pearl" metallic. I always wondered why Honda didn't offer a third color-White- like they now use on the coveted "R" series cars. White is the color Honda started Racing with in the early days of their Formula One campaigns. I have a Red one and I love the car, but White would have been my choice if they had offered all three. Also I almost forgot they had a small chin spoiler on the front.

Were are you? If your in the USA we had "s" models too

I founda a 2cnd gen Euro spec Civic "S" in pick n pull today, would you be able to bolt everything (engine/tranny) right up from it to a first gen civic?

also, how many valve is the 1500 gls in these?

thanks
