you guys forgot the

SF: that stands for four door civics, 4 speed

SN-522cc 1982 PRELUDE 2door sedan 1751cc 5speed

That is all that is lised for that code and there are hundreds more, the listing I have looks like all the 1st gen Hondas Civic, Accord and Preludes

It also has a lising for the engine codes too.

I will post these up on www.1stgencivic after I get the rest of the site back up. If you need anything I can post it for you here in the meantime.

Cheers :)

At least for Civics...
First two letters:
SB - 1200
SG - CVCC
WB - Wagon

Next letter:
A - Trunk model or Wagon, 4-speed
B - Wagon, 2-speed
C - Hatch, 4-speed
D - Hatch, 2-speed
E - Hatch, 5-speed

Next digit - model year
for CVCC's
1 - 1975
2 - 1976
...
5 - 1979

I'd assume something similar for 1200's, with 1973 being 1, '74, 2, etc.

Last digits are a sequential serial number.

Engines can be decoded as:
EB1, EB3, ED3, etc - type of engine
next number - year, I think these are the same as the year of the car

Next number is emissions info, I think it's...
0 - California emissions
5 - 49 State low altitude
9 - High altitude
That's at least for '79 model years, I'm relatively sure it holds throughout the whole 1st gen CVCC production run. I don't have any info about overseas stuff, the emissions digit would probably be something different.

I don't have any Accord or Prelude resources either, but the early ones are probably similar, with the exception of the first three digits, and the year digit starting point ('76 for Accords, '79 for Preludes). 1980 Honda changed the whole VIN structure around to a 17 Digit VIN that I heard is (was?) a relative standard in the automotive industry.

it does, but it doesn't go as in depth as go4mo wants it. it basically just covers year changes. thats a great book and everyone here should own it, though.

I'll see if I can scan in a page from my "HOw to rebuild your Honda car engine" after school today. It's got a couple of pages on vin id's if I recall correctly.

hey ..
thought this might be a useful thread --

interested in getting more info thru VIN codes ..
many wreckers list the chassis number, but know nothing about the vehicle .. it would make part finding easier to know more about the vehicle !

for example --
SN5220C009732

is a first gen prelude - but what else about it?

has anybody found out how to search a chassis number for full vehicle info?

mayb sue can ..
