I ordered the EM1 and noted its a paper gasket over the aluminum one that the EL normally uses?

Is there any problems with using the paper one over the metal one. It seems these engines are based on the same block so I cannot see why they changed?

Thanks,

- Kurt

Same here. I've been using the '83 EM1 I/E gasket on my '79 EL head for a long time. The intake holes in the gasket are a little smaller than the ports, but everything else lines up. I do have to snip one corner of the gasket to clear the A/C alternator bracket, but it's no big deal.

Excellant, we now KNOW that the EM, EL, EC are the same in that regard. Now if we could just put a 1500 EL crank next to both an EM crank and an EK crank we would know the differences and similarites there as well. there as well.

By total coincidence, I just checked out Schucks.com(PartsAmerica) to see how much an I/E gasket would cost for my 81 EK. It's the exact same gasket as my 82 EM, and therefore it would work on your EL, and it only costs like $15. Check out if they'll ship to Canada.

The 78 cvcc (ED) gasket won't work.It has a two port exhaust. The gasket you need fits the 75-79 EC from the canadain Civic Wagon, EF1 and EF2 from the Accord and the 79-81 EL.Here is a pic (sorry its not for sale)As John said I also think that the early 4 port EK(81)uses the same gasket except with the AUX ports.

Kurt,
You need the gasket from the 1500EM1 which is a four port intake and exhaust. The earlier ones i.e. 76-79 are two port exhaust and won't work on your application. BTW that price is outofsight. If you watch eBay you can get an entire headset, headgasket and all for half of that. And also yes the CVCC 4-port intake/exhaust gasket will work on a Canadian non-CVCC application fine. Are you sure though that the EL and the 1500 CVCC use the same gasket? Could be the one that fits the early 1751 four-port instead. I'm not sure they are the same.

I need a new intake/exhaust gasket for my '81 EL. It apppears these headers are quite hard on them and slowly begin to melt them!

Anyway, Lordco priced out the gasket for the 81 EL and it came out to $60. I had them price a gasket for a 78 1500 CVCC and it came out to only $25 ??

Here is the thing, the 1500 CVCC and the 79-81 EL have the exact same port spacing??

The only difference I can see is in the CVCC runners but I do not believe this changes the gasket.

They are orderng both for comparison but at this point I'm thinking the CVCC one is cheaper because its a more common motor?

Anyone ever interchanged these gaskets? Are they different?
