To remove it just follow the end of the wire and look underneath the glove box there you will find where the harness runs through the firewall, you will find 4 connectors (each have a 14ga. blk/white and a 16ga. green/blk) one goes through the firewall while the other goes into the dash harness, and the remaining two go to the auto shifter...simply you remove the two connectors that go to the shifter, and plug in the dash and firewall connectors and you should be able to do away with that switch.
I removed it when I took out my Hondamatic and swapped in a 5speed.

Looks like its the slider thingee that the Hondamatic shifter uses to turn on reversing lights and the ignition disabler when its in gear. You should be able to work out which bits to join together so you can unplug it and still start the car.
Not sure what it was doing round your feet tho...
