I've adjusted my valves back and loosened them, but it didn't fix teh problem and made the engine noisier, so I adjusted them back to tight. Now that I'm thinking of it though, I accidently broke off an auxiliary rocker bolt(a tiny one) that holds down the rocker assembly about a year ago. It runs without it but I bet that's causing some problems(especially now that I can hear it). As for ignition, it's an electronic 81 EK1 and scoped out just fine at the shop. I think I'll have to get a new bolt and extract the old one before anything else.

You might check your valve lash, and be sure that one of them is not too tight...jeeze that is a tough one because it can be either a fuel, or an ignition problem, or even both combined.
Are you still running points? if so check your dwell etc. Also ...long shot...but the new exhaust with the header combined may have leaned out the air/fuel ratio too much...running too lean can act like that too. "The weather started getting rough, the tiny ship was tossed...a three hour tour"

Doesn't appear to be a problem w/ either compression or leakage, which is no surprise as the motors only about 5k miles old. ANy other ideas anyone?

Thanks John, I'll give both a try tomorrow morning. Is there some kind of list of possible causes for a misfire/backfire that I can use for elimination purposes?

Run a compression test..better yet a leakdown test, that will tell you if it is the "worst" or not.

So I got a nice new exhaust job a couple months ago, w/ my 4-1 header and a dynomax superturbo muffler, but I've got a problem...actually two, but I think they're related. When idling, the car has an audible miss that can be heard from the exhaust system, and when decelerating there is an incesant popping through the exhaust with an occasional backfire. I can't hear an exhaust leak from the engine side, and I can't seem to find a vacuum leak anywhere. Anyone got ideas?
Thanks

By the way, dynomax has a $25 rebate on the superturbos, which makes them $13.88 from summit racing w/ free shipping:)
