Get a light. Not trying to sound like a smartass, but it's the only way to do the job correctly. You can try to take a good guess by fiddling with the distributor by ear, but in order to get the best performance, engine longevity and lowest emissions, you're going to need a timing light. They're not expensive, probably would cost you the same to buy the light as it would cost you to have a shop adjust the timing, but you'll have the light and the experience in the end.
It's similar to ask how to get a screw out without a screwdriver, sure there are ways to do it... if you don't want to keep the screw
