I managed to remove the wires from the plastic connectors by using a jeweler's screwdriver. From inside the car I pulled on the wires and the grommet came with it!
Today I removed all the cables, and wires from the engine compartment. Last night I removed the panels and carpet from inside. After I get the car back on the ground I'll start cleaning preparing for paint.
My next step is get a few things recoated with zinc.
Thanks for your help.

A bit of heat might help. All of the grommets I have pulled out always appeared to have a bit of glue (contact cement?) on them.

Hey that's a good idea. Maybe I can run the hair dryer on them for a few second before pulling them out.

Once you remove them, just soak them in hot water with a little soap, it will soften them up enough to get back in without any problems

Originally I bought my car in Oregon, but the car was then in california, arizona, and Las vegas. Ha Ha.
I would buy a set of grommets from you guys. If you head out to the yard and have a few minutes, I'd appreciate it.
I'll try to remove them without breaking them for now. I wonder how they put them in. It almost looks like they glued two pieces together from each side.
Thanks for your help!

The gromets dont dry out too bad, they are just REALY hard to get out then you get to put them back . One plus is once you do get them out its a good time to remove all the extra wires that are no longer used and make a neat wiring harness too. Snap-on sells the tools required to remove the wire ends from the conectors for a factory look rather than just choping them and have it look ugly.

I removed mine when I painted my bay. However, here in BC our rubber grommets don't dry up quite ike they do in Arizona! Perhaps one of the BC guys can send you some down from a parts car? I may have some lying around but its generally not something I think of saving.

When you guys paint your fire wall, do you remove the wires and accessories? I tried pulling out the rubber grommets, but I stopped because i didn't want them to break. Did you guys paint over your grommets?
Here's Kurts Car...
