I am located in washington state on the westside of the state. the car will be for street driving 99% of the time. Mostly highway. I just dont want a tranny with such a tall 5th gear that the little 1200 wont keep it moving. I am planning a 1200 build up just like everyone else to add a little zip. Just mainly looking for info. Thanks again

Ok, it seems like you're using the right oil. I'm not familiar with the Lucas oil treatment, but I'd ask around before using it just to be sure. I think with synthetic oils, the synchros don't really work correctly. If you have a shop manual, the instructions are in there for rebuilding the transmission. I'd like to know if there's a way to tell the difference between the transmissions without the stickers as well. I've got two transmissions at home without stickers, and I'm not sure what they came out of.
If the transmissions you have were all out of the same type of car, you can probably make one good out of the bad ones, as long as the same thing didn't cause the deaths of all the transmissions.
This thread has a chart of the different transmission ratios:

I guess it depends on what you are planning on doing with the car, good highway mileage and performance don't always go hand in hand. Be honest with yourself as to what you're planning on using the car for, and make your choice then. Where are you located?

well jonothan I am using just 10-40. i think i may try some lucas opil treatmant in this one.
I figure some guyss get all the breaks and I get all the broken. The trannies that ive had. Not too sure about models anymore but.
The first one drove for like 2 days and on the freeway the pedal dropped to the floor. tons of cable hanging everywhere. you could shift but the tranny wasnt engaging. I think I blew the diff.
The one I have now is supposedly a 5 speed but wont shift into 5th gear. I dont even feel the knotch for the gear to go into 5th.
So well try this one. Also is there a way to tell what trannys they are without that code sticker on the housing. all my stickers have fallen off and I cant remeber which tranny weas which.
Is it very difficult to rebuild a manual tranny. maybe Ill try to make a few good ones out of the bad ones.

Hey Mike, just a quick question - What kind of oil are you using in the transmissions? Are you using gear oil or regular 10W-40? Using the wrong stuff may be the reason the transmissions are going south so quickly.

I am looking in to yet another 5 speed. This will be my 4th tranny in 2 years and so far none have lasted. This tranny I have the gear ratios for from the other board. will this be good for highway top speeds and gas mileage and maybe a little performance. not like the 1300 from 80 but better than the stock 78 1200 4 speed.
Thanks
